Maxamed Ibrahim Warsame (Hadraawi)

Maxamed Ibrahim Warsame (Hadraawi) is a well respected Somali poet who has for decades contributed to the richness of the Somali poetry, art and culture. He composed some of the best Somali songs. Hadrawi also composed many poems and plays highlighting the suffering and the hardships endured by the Somali civilians under successive regimes. He has lately been active in promoting peace and reconciliation.

Mohamed Hashi Dama (Gariye)

Mohamed Hashi Dama (Gariye) who studied biology at the Somali National University and was lecturer at the university of several years. He is not only an acclaimed poet but he has also contributed a lot to scansion and meter of Somali poetry and he contributed a lot to the documentation of Somali culture and heritage at the Academy of Culture in Mogadishu during the Bare Government. During the conflict he has composed many poems call for peace and appealing for the abandonment of the use of clan divisions.

Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan

Sayid Mohamed Abdulle Hassan, who was born in 1856 was the leader of the Dervish Movement which waged an armed struggle against the colonials that divided the Somali territories from 1911 to 1920. He was also a knowledgeable religious man, philosopher, poet and military strategist. He use his poetry to attract supports, inform the Somali people about the Dervish struggle and condemn his adversaries. He has composed a large number of poetry in different poetic genre. It is commonly accepted that he was a great leader well ahead of his time.
